"FINE CRAFT 2003: FOUR
VIRTUES"

Artist Info and Selected Exhibit Entries |
Fine Craft 2003: Four Virtues is a curated exhibit and
sale of fine craft pieces selected by the show's curator,
Mark Koons (Wheatland, WY). Koons is an award-winning
woodworker whose furniture pieces show the influence of
his years in Japan. In 2000, Koons received the "Switchback
Ranch Purchase Award" at the Western Design Conference
in Cody, WY for a table that is now on permanent display
at the Buffalo Bill Museum. In 2002, the Western Design
Conference invited him to be one of four exhibition judges.
His vision as curator is to select pieces that exemplify
his "four virtues" of fine craftsmanship: functional
excellence, appropriate use of materials, truth of line
and skill of execution. The pieces selected honor the
traditional and |

|
fundamental values of finely
crafted things, which Koons feels are largely ignored
in the visual arts community. Also on display at Denver
International Airport in the exhibit space on the passenger
walkway connecting Jeppesen Terminal and Concourse A,
January 9 through April 4, 2004.6 Above

"TRANSITIONS: NEW WORKS BY THE MIXED MEDIA PAINTING
SCHOOL OF STEAMBOAT SPRINGS"
May 16 - June 8, 2003
Public Reception: Friday, May 16, 5-7 pm
Gallery Talk: Saturday, May 17, 9-10:30 am
Recent work by current members of the Mixed Media Painting School of Steamboat Springs. "Transitions" means different things for each artist: some relate it to the different seasons, some to the life cycle, some to the transitions from invisible spirit to visible body form. The work in this exhibit may include the use of paint, pastel, dirt, hair, varied paper material, found objects from nature, discarded man made items, newspaper articles, photography and even gun powder, to name a few. This use of varied art materials allows the artist to explain their message on a deeper and more complex level. The result is an interesting mix of diverse work. |

"COLLAGE AND CLAY: SHAPING THE WORLD"
December 6, 2002 - January 19, 2003
Ann Bunn, a collage artist, and Gail Frasier, a ceramic artist, presented an exhibit that juxtaposed and created a visual dialog between their two very different modes of artistic expression. Although opposites in scale, medium, and form, the two different bodies of work complement one another, and provide interesting visual and expressive interactions.
Each artist has been exploring new artistic directions in recent years. A former art museum educator, Ann creates postcard-size collages from "found" images to explore ideas about visual communication in the contemporary world. She removes visual fragments from their original contexts and recombines them to form tiny enigmatic scenes, often domestic interiors with still lifes. Gail's sculptural ceramic vessels, inspired by nature forms of her native Florida and the mountains of Colorado, represent a new personal direction and exploration in her medium after many years as a functional potter. Her expressive forms and rich surface textures create a strong presence.
